Continuity Editing Introduction

We started by looking at the brief as we had to come up with ideas for a story line; we had to make sure we followed the brief we got given a simple brief which consisted of
A character opens the a door, crosses a room and sits down on a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue.
We had to make sure that it included; match on action , rule of thirds and the 180 degree rule.

When me and my group had originally came up with an idea , it was the idea of  A rebellious child has been discharged from a juvenile detention center and is being forced to go to counselling sessions, where he displays aggressive, destructive and intolerable behavior, along with a lot of attitude, we got this idea from an episode of Criminal Minds where a boy named Amanda seeks therapy from Reid who helps him out by revealing some information about him. We got the inspiration from the two characters to create similar characters but with a different personality.

Our Character Zuha was inspired by Reid
Our character Brandon was inspired by Amanda

The different types of camera techniques we used was; match on action, rule of thirds and 180 degree we also used pann and tilts when needed, we did close ups to make it seem more exaggerated and we did long shots , high shots and mid shots, we also used a dolly for when tracking Brandon walking.

Example: Match On Action

Match on action  is an editing technique for continuity editing in which one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of the subject in the first shot.
I used match on action in my scene with the door, we had the door being kicked down, we filmed Brandon walking up and kicking the door and we saw from the inside of the room where Zuha was this is where the action was seen.

                                                                      Example: Rule Of Thirds

Rule of thirds we had to ensure that the person who was on screen , there eyes were on the grid and that it followed the rule of thirds, we had to make sure we got this right especially when doing close ups with the face the eyes had to be on the grid, if we were doing a view from outside we had to make sure that the horizon sits on the second line as this is where the sky and the ground would meet, we used this a lot whilst filming.

Example: 180 Degree Rule

Rule of 180 degree, this was rule was very important because we had to make sure we didn't break the imaginary line when filming we had to ensure that this was executed correctly. We used this whilst filming when a conversation was taking place between Brand and Zuha, we also had to make sure we didn't break this because if we did it would show that we did not know how to execute this and that we don't understand it.

                                                 Example: High Angle

A high shot is used to make the other person look smaller and weaker, we used a high angle in our work we used it when Brandon was sitting down on the chair and the camera was at a high angle making the other person watching over him have more power than him.

Example: Low Angle

A low angle makes us see things from the other person view, in our scene we used a low angle when Brandon went down into his bag we did a low shot of when he moves us , making  the audience see what he pulled out of his bag.

                                                             Example: Extreme Close Up

An extreme close is used when either focusing on one specific thing or facial expression. we used an extreme close up in our scene when Brandon light up a cigarette with a lighter, we did an extreme close up because we wanted the audience to focus on the act he was doing.

Draft Encounter

This is my Draft video that I did during my edit workshop , it hasn't been finished yet but this is what I have edited so far using iMovie, we used iMovie for editing our footage.
When editing it made things a lot more clear to me and showed me what shots needed to be re filmed and what was missing it made the whole scene look neater and order therefore making the shots go in a Continuity order.

I realised that when Brandon goes down into his bag he is going down in the wrong direction therefor making it look weird I also noticed that in a few of the shots Zuha has her glasses on and off which breaks the continuity order therefore making it look out of place.

When I finish my editing for my footage I hope to have all the shots done well and all the shots needed will be there such as the; match on action, rule of three and the 180 degree rule, hopefully by next week my scene should be completed and all the edit would have been done.

Planning For The Edit Workshop

During this week in media we got given a scenario that we will have to film , we got told to add in dialogue for the character's and we have to  also make sure that we included different type of camera shots and angles. Our first piece of work was to decide what our story line will be for the scene my group decided that our story line is going to be based on a troubled student who has just gotten out of prison and is forced to go to counselling.  In our scene we have to make sure that we use the rule of thirds and make sure that it is used correctly .

Once we decided on our story line we had to create our storyboard which will come in useful for when we start to film. In the storyboard we had to draw out what we would like to happen in the scene we also had to include the dialogue and the different camera angles .We also had to add in the different type of edits we will be using.

Our storyboard explains our story line and shows what will happen when we will be filming. In total we have 20 frames, each frame has a specific time limit and includes all the information that is needed we have to also make sure that we do not break the 180 degree rule when doing a shot we also had to make sure that we included shot reverse shot this was to show that we understood how to use the technique.

We had to make sure that our footage had the rule of three  this would ensure that the person who was on camera would always be on the grid and that there eyes were correctly following the rule of thirds. 180 degree rule we had to make sure that we didn't break this rule because if we did the shot will look bad and it will also look wrong when watching it.

Match on action was included  this was to show where the match on action is happening, in this scene it would be  when  the door is being kicked open , the person sitting in the room is where we see the match on action taking place as we the action happening, these were the key things needed in our footage, this is to show that we understand the rules and show that we also know how to use them, we also had to make sure our shots were in a continuity order, so then it doesn't confuse our audience, also it makes the brief clear.
