Treatment For My Opening Sequence

Narrative

Our story line will be in an Restricted order as we will see everything from the main protagonists view and no one else's view, we will also be using non digetic sounds as we will use what we hear when filming,we will also be using digetic music in the beginning of the opening sequence we will be using an original piece of music that is composed by an ordinary person.

Our story line is based on specific students lives as some people actually do get pressured a lot at home with there parents and also get compared to there high achieving siblings which will make them feel bad about them self.

Our opening sequence will revolve around Brandon who is the main protagonist we see in the opening sequence we see his struggles we start the opening sequence by having Brandon walking up the stairs of a bridge and we see him walking closer to the edge of the bridge, just when he reaches the edge of the bridge he shuts his eyes and opens them and we see what he is seeing, we then fade to black and go into a montage where we see flashes of his life from him getting told off by his parents to his teachers at school comparing him to his siblings.

In the flash back we see the relationship he shared with his siblings and his parents we see his mum always being the one who tries to bring the best out oh his family except him and we see his dad always making him feel small and just like they are not worth it.
We do a scene where he is in school and a teacher is telling him off as he got bad results in his test and we see her just comparing him to his high achieving family.

We also have a scene where he is by himself in his room isolated where we see that he is attempting to cut his wrist as he is trying to find a route of escape, but then we see him try and result into other things such as running away and just keep on moving on but he cant, we also see him alone in school with no friends and we see how he gets picked on because he is different from his perfect high achieving family. In the film we see him try and seek help by going counselling but as we see that it does not help him it just makes him hate his life a lot more we see how he does try and talk to his mum but because she is too focused on her other kids and making them become higher and we see how she ignores him.

We then see how he goes and talks to his dad which turns out to be a big mistake as we see his father resulting to the bottle which causes him to lash out at the son for no reason and we also see how he is not home a lot and the lack of a man in the house really starts to get to the son, we then see the scene where we see the son walking towards the bridge and we see him getting closer and closer to the edge and as we see him on the edge trying to jump off and we see that as he does jump off people on the street quickly get an ambulance to get him in but even as he gets to the hospital we see that only his mum comes but even as she is there she's having a go at him for doing something which she thinks is silly and was pointless we see that she does not even ask him as to why he did it, we see social care workers get involved and end up taking Brandon away to a foster home as we see he becomes more happier there because he gets the love and attention from the care workers that he never got from his 'perfect family' at the end we see that the only thing that has changed is that he is no longer part of the family and is with social workers who care for him.

Brief Synopsis:
A perfect family, with perfect lives, except for the outcast. Pressured, stressed and an emotional wreck, constantly compared to his high achieving siblings, he just wants out. He tries everything but he cant work it out, he just cant escape from the pressure, so what's next; escape from... life?

The main focus of our film is our protagonist, a teenage boy who is trying to fit into society but all his parents want is for him to strive academically, even though that is a major downfall for him. Constantly being compared to his smarter siblings, all he wants to do is shut everything out and focus on the things he is good at. He cant escape from the pressure he is constantly being put under, so he has thoughts about escaping in another way, ending his life completely, but he cant decide if it is the right decision or not.

Opening Sequence:
In the opening sequence, we are going to set it in a non-linear order. The first thing the audience will see is a montage of his memories, him getting shouted at by his teachers, arguing with his parents, studying then failing a test and so on. It will then focus on him walking somewhere, towards a rooftop, where the video has no sound, but it is a voice-over of his thoughts, and we will see this from his point of view, as if its his eyes. We will then have a scenery shot of London, where the protagonist is about to make his final decision, then it cuts to black and our sequence ends where the movie would start.

Title:
Our title for our project is called Isolated we chose this title because it relates to our main character and denoted how he isolates himself from everyone because society and his family isolated him away from everyone. The title follows the conventions of a British social realism's by having the title be short and simple as most British social realism  have a one worded title it normally hints what the film may be about. Our title will appeal to our target audience as it is short simple and catchy and is something that some people can relate to because some people sometimes feel isolated.

Target Audience
Age - 15-25 year old's
Gender - Male and female
Interest - School, culture, mental illnesses
Location - United Kingdom-Kent

Ethnicity - All
Class - Working class

Our target audience is aged towards 15-25 year old's because they are more likely to relate to it and also our main character will be in the same age range. Also, its really only 15-25 year old's that are under pressure by their parents, and this is an age where we see a lot of teens struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. We think that our movie will relate to both genders because male and female teenagers have the same problems. In interests, school is a main one as this is one of the main things that is actually making the students parents pressure him and actually drive him into trying to take his life. Mental illnesses come into it when we see he is suffering from depression, which is a common problem in many teenagers and young adults and is still brought on my school. Location is Britain, as it is a British social realism. Ethnicity is also all as its not just Asian students that get pressured, but all, but I think its more emphasized among Asian students. We said working class because its just about peoples everyday life, and in everyday life most people are working class. Also, our target audience is in the peak of the amount of media they use, as teenagers are always on their phones or watching television.

Representation
Characters and types
The protagonist in our British social realism is also the lost boy, which is an archetype specifically designed for the BSR genre. We see all his struggles and downfalls, and at first we see everything through his eyes as well, which is a restricted point of view. We see the mother come off as the female with a conscience, as she is strong and supportive to the rest of the family yet still singles out the lost boy. The father then comes across as the weak but aggressive man, as we see him trying to control his family, but really it is the mother the one that takes control in the family, so it is a reverse gender role. Our film will show Asian family embracing the stereotypical view given to them by general society, by seeing them put pressure on their kids to become doctors or surgeons or lawyers, and achieve the top of the top and be above everyone else.
In our project we will also be using another three students who will be the siblings of the lost boy and we also get the background information about them and how they are more successful than our lost boy and we also see his parents favor the siblings more than the lost boy, which also makes the lost boy feel even more lower about themselves.

Brandon-Main character(lost boy)

Technology
In our production, our main focuses of using technology will be our post-production stage, which is editing and putting together all the footage to make an actual opening sequence. We will use either iMovie or Final Cut Pro, and we will be using them on an iMac. We will have to change the colour of our clips to match our colour pallet, our chosen colour pallet is blue/grey to give the audience the vibe that its cold and it also denotes the realism a lot more.We will do this in the settings of these software's.
Camera shots we will be using will be varied, we would use close ups to show the facial expressions and an extreme close up to show the focusing point on our character, we will also be using mid shots this is to show the audience the body language of the characters , we will also be using long shots and establishing shot this allows the audience to see the location of where we film, it also allows the audience to relate to the location as it could be in there area. We will be using a camera that the school provides us with, but it will be high definition and at 23.98fps. We do have some limitations, as we would like some better filming equipment but its all extremely expensive as its all professional equipment.

Conventions
Our film will be following most of the BSR conventions. We will be using realistic settings, as we will be filming in the suburbs of Kent, which is also where our suicide scene will take place. Some places of Kent are still very dark and gloomy, as they are full of council estates and big blocks of flats. Another convention we are following is realistic situations and events that take place are teenage troubles, suicide, mental illness, these are a lot of situations people can relate too. Our project is going to be one genre it will have no hints of any hybrids as it takes away from the realism of a BSR.

Style & Iconography

When filming or opening sequence we will be using a camera and we will start off with seeing what our protagonist sees our scene starts off with our protagonist walking up a few steps walking towards a bridge and we see everything or character sees we will start it off with seeing the scenery of where they are and we will then do a flash back montage where we see specific parts of our protagonists life and see how they are treated and what it was that has led them to do what they are doing now, this will catch the audiences attention immediately because they would want to know what's going and what's lead them to this situation so immediately they would want to know what happens next. Our story line will be in an Restricted order as we will see everything from the main protagonists view and no one else's view as we will see everything he goes through and how he coped with it.

I would use long shots to where we see the bridge this gives the audience time to get a grasp on what's going on and we will do a track where every step they walk the camera follows them also once we reach the bridge we do the shot as though the camera is the person by closing there eyes and opening them to see the view of them looking down from the bridge.

We will be using cuts because its an easier transition to use when going to one scene to another,in our scene where our protagonist is on the bridge we do a fade to black this is to build up tension to see what happens next this will make the audience want to know what happened and they would want to know if the protagonist makes it or not.
We will use normal everyday clothing to show that they are normal everyday people the audience will feel like they could relate more to the characters, also using a school location will make it more relatable towards them.

Costume for lost boy

With the music it will be an original piece of music created by someone who is not famous we will make sure that our music is not copy righted,we will also make sure that the music suits our piece work this will make the audience feel the right atmosphere when they hear it, we will also be using non digetic sounds as we will use what we hear when filming,we will also be using digetic music in the beginning of the opening sequence we will be using an original piece of music that is composed by an ordinary person.
In our project we will be using super imposed graphics to get the audiences attention we would make sure that the typography we use is mysterious to suit the theme we are trying to put across.

Institution
Film4 is well known for there British social realism film such as the imposter and the selfish giant and because they are well known for there BSR we are required to make a BSR that follows all the conventions of one.If I was to distribute the film it would be in a bigger cinema where everyone will be able to watch and see it and its more accessible where as if we did independent it could ruin the marketing as if the film does not make it to its potential and falls through it would fail and ruin the marketing whereas being more wildly distributed more people are more likely to see and watch it.

We would like to exhibit the film in big cinemas such as odeon , cinieworld and we would also like to make the film available through downloading it on laptops and phones therefore making it more available for everyone also nearly everyone owns a mobile phone and laptop and computer people are able to download as it is easier for everyone.

BSR-Production Log 7

This week in media I had to go back on my work and make sure I improved it and made it better. I had to make sure that I corrected any mistakes I made and I showed all my improvements in my work, I also had to make sure that any missing work was added and all the grammar mistakes were done and also made sure I added more information about my analysis.

This was one of the activities we had to do, we had to go on Wikipedia and go on the random page and whatever the title was , we had to use it as  our band name we then had to go on a quotation page and go on random quote which ever quote we got we had to use it as our slogan and for the picture we had to chose the picture that was third, this task was to help us create ideas for our BSR.

Another activity we did was we had to be put into two groups of five and create a little story using adjectives nouns and the, in the group of 5 we created a short story.
The purpose of these exercises was to show us different way of creating ideas and that it does take time to come up with a good idea we got asked what we thought about these tasks and we said that the tasks were creative in different ways.

This week our main aim was to focus on coming up with ideas for our own project.

Ideas From News Paper

This story line is about a 48 year old police officer who has been arrested due to alleged rumours regarding child abuse the 48 year old has been questioned because he has had things to do with an old incident regarding a child. This would make a good British social realism film as I could base my film on a child who has been abused as a child and grows up only loving and valuing herself only how others do which could link with two themes; child abuse and promiscuity, the film would focus on the child's life as a young child so we see how they copped with it and then we will flash forward and see the child as an adult and we see how they value them self only  how other people see them, but we see how she lives and show different types of classes the person that abuses her is her uncle who lives with them and he is very old fashioned  the class of her family would be upper class so my first location would be a modern house that has been nicely done , and when we see her as an adult we see that she is of a low class and the people that she goes with are of a higher class, the location here would change to maybe and estate flat that she is living in without anyone knowing , I think that in my film I'll make the uncle the same age as the police officer because this would show the big age difference the child would be 10 and also a girl. This storyline would focus on the loss of a childhood and also shows how people suffer in silent and grow up loathing themselves because of what had happened when they were little.

This story line is about young adolescences taking drugs and how young teenagers around the world have admitted to taking drugs. This would make a good British social realism because it would be about young people our age and it'll be more relatable, I would focus on the life of a group of people and see how they live there life but in that group of people I would focus on one specific teenager who is aggressive and has a terrible attitude and resorts to drugs as something to get away from his perfect family as everyone in his family has high expectations and they all are well educated and have top jobs this would put a lot of pressure on the boy at school and we would follow how he is in school and we learn that he has an attention deficiency in class and we see how this affects his life by him getting told off at him being shouted at and making him feel stressful and resorting to drugs as an escapism. I would set this in a modern working class house here we would see the perfect family and the I would follow him in school so we get the location of his school and we see how he works and for the last location I would do an alleyway because this is where we will see the drugs taking place being used. In my film I would make the boy around 16 or 17 because its a more realtbale age for the audience.

This story line is about how the worlds changing for the next generations of the youth and how they might grow up being apartheid , separated from other children. This would make a good British social realism film because I would focus on how society is different and how they get treated different from others this could also focus on race and see how people are still making a fuss over people with different ethnicity and colour, I would focus on an individual Muslim  family as some people in this generation are very races towards them I would focus on a Muslim kid who grew up in an area where they would be able to mix with other kids and get along and they would be treated the same but they would move because there parents would be arguing and be in the middle of a divorce so I would show how they move to a different part of London to a more rougher area and there we would see the difference between how they was treated and how they are being treated now we will see how they try and talk to different people and they get looks that make them feel uncomfortable and they will be treated differently to other people. I would set this in a more unfriendly area where they would live in a run down house and we could how they are racist my throwing a brick in the glass just like in Made in Britain's opening sequence.

Conventions Of An Opening

Conventions Of An Opening:

Analysis of Camera and Editing

Camera:
This camera shot is Tracking the boy which connotes that he is the main character as he is getting more screen time and the camera is following him around to see what he is doing this camera shot also gives us the chance to see the setting and the location of the film  which gives us the idea of his background and what class he could be in which could denote the themes of this film, such as poverty as the scene we see a back garden and a shed that looks old and run down almost as though no one has taken care of I  the camera track shows the foreground is a  country side showing that it is set in a quiet place where not many people would live, this is a clear representation of a BSR through the use of the location is an abandon back garden  that looks like no one uses very often in most BSR they have or own either something that is old or run down but they use a lot, the tracking makes us see what he is doing this camera technique allows us to see a point of view from on of the characters this shot tends to work best when there is a movement taking place.

Establishing shot- showing us the location of the film and also shows the main character in the shot, this shot is showing most of the focus on the setting and location  of where it is filmed, this shot gives the audience an idea on what type of theme there might be in the film as the location can give us a lot of information this scene is denoting the deserted streets are empty and very quiet this could connote that they live in a country side where its away from the city and not busy, this scene also shows us that there isn't many people around there this shot also connotes that the little boy is the main character as he is the only one in the shot, a lot of British social realisms use run down houses or flat estates but some of them mainly use the country side as it shows the other side of a BSR unlike the other typed of BSR we see where they are filmed in a flat estate more or less the popular theme is violence but in here we see that its mainly working class is shown clearly. The establishing shot is used when showing the setting or a location this gives the audience an idea of where the film was set.

Mid body shot and a two shot - body language and and conversation taking place. This shot here is showing us the two different types of social class you have the old male character who is dressed in a smart attire such as waist coat, blazer and a pocket watch then you get the little boy who is taking a bag to fill the it up with newspaper this is connoting that this little boy has a job as paper boy and that he is doing this to earn money as this could denote the theme of poverty, the scene is also denoting that they are both very different people and you can see that the older guy has more power and authority over the little boy as he looks at his watch then to they boy indicating the he was late, this is showing a popular British social realism theme poverty in a lot of BSR'S you see the kids tend to get a job and earn money for example in The selfish Giant Arbar gets a job and earns money. This mid body shot allows the audience to see body language and this shot is used a lot to show the audience what's happening, the two shot here indicates that a conversation is taking place allowing the audience to get an understanding of what's going on.
Editing:

In this scene we have a cut edit being used this allows the scene to go into another scene with a smooth transition this allows the audience to watch the film without noticing that a cut has happened. In this scene here we see the little boy getting up from his bed and getting dressed then the scene gets cut to the next scene which is him leaving the house to go to the shed. in this scene the cut edit is done well as its was not noticeable every single film and BSR use the cut edit as it is very easy to use and easy to understand and is just easy to execute in a film. The edit in this shot was a cut this cut allows a smooth transition to take place it also allows the audience to know that it is a new scene on screen.

In this scene we have a long take most British social realisms use long takes in there films it's one of the most used takes in editing, the long takes allows us to see and focus on either the character on the screen who is running away from the dog and it also allows the audience to see the surrounding of the location and to see what they can expect in the film, the location allows us to see what type of place they live in if it is a rough area. This scene also allows us to see how things are in reality and also the BSR shows us that its not all glamour and and it shows the reality of life, this take shows us the setting and location of how there life is like. The long take is different to the establishing shot, the establishing shot shows us the setting but the long take focuses on the movement on the screen, this is showing the audience the different between the two shots.

In this scene the music played emphasises that he is a child as the music played is flute that reminds me of the pied piper which can relate towards child hood, but in this scene you see the boy walking delivering the paper to people therefore connoting that his childhood is shortened therefore he wont get time to live it, the music is played the minute he starts to walk the music showed he was still young and we forget that as in the film we see that he is a angry boy who befriends a Kestrel bird and changes but because he if forced to grow up quick and put his childhood behind him. Music is sometimes used in BSR to show something start's dramatic or that stands up, this type of edit was selected to remind the audience that the boy in the screen is still a child, and to add to it the music chosen to play is almost childlike.

Institutional Logo

At 0:02 you see the first credits that comes which is BBC films this is the company logo which in this case is BBC films, they typography used in here is simple and also looks like a students handwriting and the writing is in white on a black background colour this makes the writing stand out and makes the audience able to read it with clarity, the BBC are the ones who are presenting the film, it did not make the film it is just playing the film for the producers, in my own project i would have film4's presents as i would be basing my film with film 4 i would use the logo instead of writing film4 as the logo stands out more and is easy to remember but for the typography i would use a simple clear typography that is easy to understand and read.

Timeline
At 0:06 you see the production company these are the people who produced the films and made the film , in the screen grab above you can see the typography is a lot more bold than the typography in the previous screen grab, over here it is a lot more bold and subtle and still has the student handwriting look to it, and also the drawing in the screen is a game that is normally played in a playground or a park, this denotes that the film has something to do with kids. when it comes to making my own project i will have to create my own production company that will be easy to create and to use on my own work.

Production Company
At 0:07 you see what the production is in association with which was with Endgame Entertainment this helps the producers, in my opening sequence i wold have to add any association that has helped me on produce my film, i would have to make sure that i add the credits for this if i had any association.

Director Name
At 0:11 we see the director who directs the film and gets the final say in the film, they get to decide what stays and goes, in my production i will have to make sure i write the directors name in bold and make sure that it comes in at the beginning of the sequence.

Actors and Actresses(Cast)
At 0:14 we have the cast the people who act in the film the actors and actresses, i will have to make sure that when it comes to adding my cast in the credits id have to make sure that i add all of them but i will have to add the main characters first before i add the extras that also feature in my opening sequence.

 Live Producer
At 0:46 this person gets to decide which actors are needed for which scenes and they also get to decide  which days they going film specific scenes, id have to make sure that in my production that i make sure that everyone i get everyone to film on the day i need them i will also have to make  sure that i have a schedule that will tell when and where we are filming.

Music Supervisor
At 0:49 we have the music supervisor  they show the producer and director  ready produced music that may be allowed to be used in the film, i will be using original piece of music i will have to make sure that the music seems and fits the scene that is going on.

Make-Up & Design

At 0:56 we have make up and design they get to style the characters and they put in time and effort to make the characters look and suite the theme and the description of them, but in most British social realism they don't use make up and hair design a lot, in my production i wont be using a hair and make up person because i think that it'll be easier if they were to do it to themselves as it would stick to the realism.

Costume Designer
At 0:59 here we see the costume designer they are in charge of the costumes for the character and they make sure that the costumes is suitable for the theme and the genre if the film ,in my production i will make sure that the costumes they wear will fit my story line i will also make sure that its simple  everyday clothing  that is being used.

Music

At 1:09 we have music this person was in charge of creating the music and playing it in the film they get to decide which parts of the films they get to use and play music in, i will be using original piece of music in my production i will make sure that it suits the sequence that i am doing.

Editor
At 1:15 we have the editor they are in charge of editing the film and making sure that its done well and all the shots are sharp, in my own production i will have to make sure that my editing is done correctly for a British social realism ,as for a BSR it can look rough and slightly off because it adds to the realism.

Production Designer
At 1:28 we have the production designer is in charge of the mise-en-scene they get to select how it will be shown to the audience in screen they get to tell the story in the way they see fit, in my own work i will make sure that the mise-en-scene is well shown so the costumes and lighting will be natural and everyday clothing i will also make sure that the location we use suits the theme and genre of my sequence.

Director of Photography
At 1:35 we have the director of photography there responsible for how the film looks on camera they are also in charge of lighting and how it looks, they are also in charge of the type of shots that would be used, in my own work i will make sure that each shot i use will follow the rule of thirds and the eye line i will also make sure that the shots look as realistic as possible by not adding any filters other than the colour palette.

Executive Producer
At 1:42 the film executive producer takes a look at the film whilst in the making they also look at the film financially and they also liaise with the line producer they then report to production companies and distributors.

Executive Producer
At 1:46 the film executive producer takes a look at the film whilst in the making they also look at the film financially and they also liaise with the line producer they then report to production companies and distributors.

Memoir

At 1:50 we have a memoir if a film is based on a book this would be shown  in the film credits, in my own production i would make my story line relatable through making it based on an individual's life and we see what they do and how they cope and handle the tasks that come there way.

Screenplay
At 1:55 we get the screen play this is the person who wrote the script for the film, they are in charge of giving the character there lines and they are also in charge of every line and the tone and how it should be said.
